RPX has worked in Uzbekistan since 2009 when it was awarded a USAID Food for Peace project and a USAID Inclusive Education Project (2009-10) to develop the educational rights of disabled Uzbek children.

Key areas of intervention include: Health, Nutrition, Education, Women Empowerment, Healthcare Policy.

RPX maintains a Central Asia regional office in Bishkek Kyrgyzstan (Regional Manager: Dr. Taalaigul Sabyrbekova) and keeps an office at the headquarters of Uzbek partner Healthy Generation (Country Representative: Nazimzhon Muminov). Through Healthy Generation, RPX also operates through three regional branch offices in Ferghana Valley, Karakalpakstan, and Surkhandarya. Key partners in Uzbekistan include: Healthy Generation; USAID; Ministry of Health; Ministry of Education; Ministry of Labor and Social Protection; Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The technical expertise of RPX combined with the regional infrastructure of local partner NGO, Healthy Generation, has proven to be an effective, low cost arrangement for feeding over 30,000 beneficiaries at 200 social welfare institutions across Central Asia. RPX has since received USAID food for Peace awards servicing all Regions of Uzbekistan (Andijon, Bukhara, Fergana, Jizzakh, Namangan, Navoiy, Qashqadaryo, Samarqand, Sirdaryo, Surxondaryo, Tashkent, Xorazm, Karakalpakstan)

The USAID Mission in Uzbekistan has been highly supportive during past RPX programs in Uzbekistan, participating in food distributions to patients in Uzbekistan and neighboring Central Asian Republics. Ambassadors Spratlen, Krol and Norland participated in official IRFP ceremonies in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

RPX’s work has been featured on the US Embassy website. Interventions conducted by RPX in Uzbekistan include:

    A. Education: RPX began its partnership with USAID in Uzbekistan in 2009 by launching the groundbreaking program, Equalization of Educational Opportunities for Children with Disabilities. RPX introduced the concept of inclusive education and individual education plans in Uzbekistan. Major project activities included policy level round tables and preparation of the National Concept for Inclusive Education.

    B. Health/Nutrition: Under the USAID Food for Peace International Food Relief Partnership program, RPX addresses food insecurity among hospitalized patients with tuberculosis throughout Uzbekistan. RPX has partnered with USAID in Uzbekistan since 2010 to deliver and distribute 55 million rations of food to 100 health care institutions in all Uzbek administrative regions. This program serves beneficiaries in each of Uzbekistan’s administrative districts. Major program components conducted annually include:

    • Nationwide nutritional need assessments
    • International delivery and customs clearance of USAID donated food
    • In-country food distribution to vulnerable beneficiaries in 100 health institutions
    • Food handover ceremony with US Embassy
    • Food security and Nutrition for Tuberculosis Advocacy Round Tables discussion (with Uzbek Policy makers and USAID Uzbekistan)
    • Nutritional research and education for TB institutions/patients (inpatients and outpatients)

    C. Women Empowerment: RPX advocates at the government level (Ministry of Health) to address women health care issues. RPX has collaborated with Europa Donna Uzbekistan (NGO) to facilitate capacity building and patient advocacy efforts for improved breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in Uzbekistan. RPX has also collaborated with Susan G. Komen Foundation to organize the first Race for the Cure with Susan G Komen Foundation in Tashkent in May 2012.

    D. Emergency Humanitarian Assistance: RPX designed and led an emergency relief effort to ship and distribute $1.2 million in emergency supplies to the health care institutions in the Fergana Valley. This effort helped ensure the provision of quality health care to displaced populations in June 2010.
